ComputerScript SoftwareComputerScript (CS) method makes word abbreviation and transcription efficient and easier. CS drastically simplifies the abbreviating process by utilizing a small set of rules to eliminate the need of remembering thousands of random abbreviations. ComputerScript software provides entering text in an abbreviated form and automatic transcription to a readable format.

CS can be applied to any vocabulary type or size (medical, legal, and any other), and it will help you to build your abbreviation list without requiring extensive rote memorization.

It can be also used for transcribing audio tapes to save time by reducing repetitious listening. CS rules can be universally applied to abbreviate words of any terminology and field. In addition, if you master the ComputerScript method you can use it for EasyScript speedwriting applications to take fast notes with pen and paper at meetings, on the phone, and in school.

ComputScript and Existing Products

Several transcription software programs such as Smartype, Abbreviate, Instant Text, and Shortcut Windows provide abbreviation expansion. Abbreviate and Instant Text systems allow you to enter a letter or letters and predict the correct word based on grammar and frequency of use. When a list of predicted words appears on the screen, you can select the word with a single keystroke. The process limits typing from a fluent task to one which requires you to constantly attend to the selection process and causing the speed reduction which increases the typing time.

Speed gains using word prediction methods only achieved when the keystroke rate is extremely slow. Expanding the vocabulary increases the time for choosing the desired word and increases typing time even more. As a result, word prediction software products have a very limited application and have not gained popularity in the marketplace.

Shortcut Windows allows typing in an abbreviation and the program will expand it to readable form. It is mainly used to abbreviate phrases, sentences, paragraphs, documents, or macros. Shortcut Windows also provides expansion of randomly created abbreviations for individual words and you need to memorize and retain in your memory a long list of codes. Smartype is supplied with a list of words and corresponding abbreviations.

Below are given comparisons of abbreviations created by ComputerScript and Smartype . The average length of a Smartype abbreviation is 7 characters and of an EasyScript abbreviation - 5 characters. As a result, ComputerScript is typed with fewer characters for each word and provide additional 28% keystroke reduction. Smartype abbreviations are created on a random basis without a consistent and structured approach. They will require more time to memorize and constant practicing to keep them in your memory. The ComputerScript abbreviating rules can be applied to transcribe an abbreviation to a readable form which reduces the transcription time as opposed to reconstructing the word from random abbreviations created by Smartype.

Medical And Legal Terminology Abbreviations

One of the flaws for existing abbreviations for medical and legal terminology is that one code is used for multiple words. For example, Medical Abbreviations and Eponyms published by Harcourt Health Scinces Company (1997) designates letter ' a' to abbreviate absorptivity , acceleration , accommodation , acid , acidity , activity , anterior , artery , asymmetric and axial. Learning Medical Terminology: A Worktext. 9 th edition, published by Mosby Lifeline (1999) uses ' adm' to abbreviate admission, admit, admitted, admitting, admittance, administer, administration, administrative, and administrator.

Applying one abbreviation for a group of words increases the memorization volume which reduces the abbreviation and transcription speed. Below are given abbreviations created by ComputerScript and alternative methods.

ComputerScript is based on dividing all words to 5 categories: simple, prefix, suffix, prefix, and compound. In the example below the words are assigned to a suffix category. ComputerScript uses by for suffix words by taking first 3 characters and adding a suffix symbol (d for -ed, g -ing, ance -c, v -ive). This strategy eliminates the need to remember a unique abbreviation for an individual word or words, reduces the overall memorization level and constant practicing and memory reinforcement is not required.

Book Sample

"The EasyScript book helped me increase my typing speed believe it or not! When the EasyScript system is used to help build your expansion list in a word-expander software program, it is invaluable. I had thousands of abbreviations in my expansion list, but had a difficult time remembering them. Thanks to this book, I now have a system for creating expansions and remember more of them. This book should really be marketed towards transcriptionists." - A. Grubano from Connecticut
